historical processing plantColumbus Foods is a family-owned business that has spent three generations blending Old World craftsmanship with superior ingredients to create foods people love. Columbus was founded in 1917 when two Italian immigrants, Domenici and Parducci, brought their treasured family recipes to San Francisco and started making salame (salami) in a two-room flat in the Italian neighborhood of North Beach. With innovations of freezers and overhead tracks, Columbus quickly grew and began selling its products to grocery stores and delicatessens as far as two hundred miles from San Francisco. In 1946, Domenici and Parducci retired and sold the business to the Devencenzi Brothers. Eleven years later, Columbus was sold to three North Beach families, DeMartini, Gatto, and Picetti, whose children and grandchildren still own and operate the business today.

salami and cheeseAs a family-run company with deep roots in the Bay Area, it is important to Columbus Foods to give back to the community in which it operates. Columbus makes regular donations of salame, deli meats, and other high-quality food products, offering our agencies and clients a diversity of products they don't normally have the opportunity to enjoy. While donating offers many business benefits for food donors, it is especially meaningful for Columbus to know that the donations they provide can make a huge difference to the thousands of people Second Harvest Food Bank serves.

After a recent fire destroyed one of their main slicing and packaging facilities in South San Francisco, Columbus has come a long way on the road to recovery and continues to support the community despite its challenges. In addition to supporting SHFB with thousands of pounds of high-quality food donations every year, Columbus Foods gives back to the community by supporting other important charities such as the American Red Cross, Saint Vincent De Paul, and Habitat for Humanity.

For the past 35 years, their South San Francisco plant has been constantly remodeled and upgraded, resulting in one of the most sophisticated dry sausage plants in the world. At Second Harvest Food Bank, we are proud to have Columbus as a donor and community partner. Our thanks go out to Columbus and the many other food donors who help us provide nutritious meals to over 231,311 people each month.
