Elevated Need Amid a
Challenging Economy

Fiscal Year 2022-2023 brought significant challenges for our community and Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. As we all faced an uncertain economy and record inflation, the elimination of emergency CalFresh benefits in March dealt another blow to low-income households already struggling to make ends meet.

Families, college students and seniors on fixed incomes turned to Second Harvest for food assistance, and we immediately saw a spike in need. We began serving half a million people every month starting in February 2023 — numbers we hadn’t seen since the height of the pandemic. The same pressures impacting our clients also strained our budget. While our costs and the number of neighbors seeking our help increased, financial donations decreased significantly.

The cumulative effect of these challenges put us to the test and required us to make difficult choices in order to balance our budget while still meeting the high level of need. We reduced the amount of food we purchased, grew community volunteer support, and increased the already substantial amount of high-quality food we rescue and provide to partners and clients. The innovative spirit and resilience of our staff, volunteers and partners, combined with the generosity of this incredible community, helped us overcome significant challenges and show up for our neighbors.

Seeing our shared community come together to make such a huge difference filled me with hope for the future. Challenges still exist, and your continued support is essential to ensuring that all our neighbors have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. Our community has the entrepreneurial spirit, ingenuity and resources to end hunger in Silicon Valley. Together with you, we will.

Partners Make
Our Work Possible

Second Harvest is at the center of the charitable food distribution system in Silicon Valley, supplying fresh food through nearly 400 partner agencies at more than 900 sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. We provide food free of charge to our partner ecosystem, which includes soup kitchens, affordable housing sites, rehabilitation centers, shelters, schools, colleges, libraries, senior centers, medical clinics and more. We are always looking to make nutritious food more accessible through collaboration, and our extensive partner distribution network helps us reach anyone who needs a nutritious meal – in every corner of our region.

"Our partners are truly amazing. They galvanize their staff, volunteers, clients and resources to play a transformative role in addressing food insecurity in our community. Their partnership with Second Harvest enables our collective mission of ending hunger in our region."

Anna Dyer, Second Harvest Director of Programs

Ensuring Everyone Has Access to Nutritious Food

Food insecurity in our community is a hidden epidemic. Because of higher prices and reduced government support, working parents, college students and seniors on fixed incomes struggle to make ends meet in this exorbitantly expensive area. Community support means neighbors can count on access to nutritious food from Second Harvest, no matter what comes along.

In a survey from Second Harvest clients:

51%
had less than $100 in savings.
57%
were worried about being able to pay next month's rent or mortgage.
93%
bought less food due to high gas prices and/or inflation.

Client Stories

Carlos, Daly City

“My CalFresh card had $200. Now I’m down to $30. And it makes me kind of embarrassed, but I still need help. I need that assistance.”

Thi, San Jose

“We have a huge family. We live with multiple families. [Before receiving Second Harvest food] It was really tough to go to the market and buy enough food for that huge amount of people…there was not enough food at all.”

Joseph, San Jose

“Being a single-income family of five, especially given all the increase of prices across the board for everything in the last six months or more, having the ability to get food boxes from Second Harvest really makes a huge difference for our family in terms of making ends meet and being able to afford to live here in Silicon Valley.”

Developing New Ways to Connect Neighbors to Food

Amid continued inflation, a weakening economy and a significant reduction in CalFresh benefits (aka food stamps), more people turned to Second Harvest for help last year. Our Food Connection hotline answered the call, helping households stretch their budgets by providing referrals to free food programs and screening for CalFresh eligibility.

Throughout this busy year, Second Harvest continued to develop new ways to connect people to food resources. To make it easier than ever for families to find free summer meal sites and free grocery distributions, Second Harvest launched an easy-to-use food locator tool on our website, where users can search by address, city or zip code to find food nearby. And to reach even more people in need of food assistance, Second Harvest launched the Outreach Partner Engagement Network (OPEN) to leverage each partner’s strength to promote food assistance programs in every neighborhood of Silicon Valley.

Food Connection Stories

Phuong

“I feel good when the call goes smooth. Like, callers were able to do the CalFresh application and the free grocery program. That feeling just makes me happy. It makes me happy to hang up and get them the services they need.”

True

“Seniors are saying that we’re their main source of food.”

Our Community
Rose to the Challenge

Amidst a transformational year for our organization, our community stepped up. As the San Jose Conservation Corps’ pandemic support ended, we had a critical need for volunteers to replace this crucial workforce. Dedicated volunteers, including individuals and community, faith-based and corporate groups, consistently showed up at our warehouses and food distributions to help keep up with the soaring demand for our services, proving just how much our community can do when we come together.

0
Unique volunteers contributed more than 283,000 hours of service valued at $7.6M, the equivalent of 136 full-time employees.
0%
Community volunteer hours grew by 60% in FY23 as we worked to replace the hours provided by the San Jose Conservation Corps.

Volunteer Stories

Chris

“Volunteering is satisfying. We’re doing something that is very meaningful, and it’s a selfless act. Volunteering is not thinking about yourself; it’s thinking about other people. Our world would be a better place if more people volunteered.”

Hannah

“Food plays a significant role in supporting our health and well-being. It provides essential nutrients that are necessary for the proper functioning of our bodies. When we come together, we can ensure families across the Bay Area can access the nutritious groceries they need to thrive.”

Jenny

“It is wonderful to come together and work with a team whose common purpose is not money-driven. Each produce box, bag of chicken, bag of dry goods goes out to our neighbors in need. Even on the slowest produce line that I have worked on, the team made enough produce boxes for 540 families in need. Every produce box counts. Every volunteer matters.”

Sourcing 125
Million Pounds

To meet the incredible need for food assistance in our community while planning for the long-term sustainability of the food bank, our Food Sourcing team continued to find creative, cost-effective ways to access food. Last year we were able to source and distribute 125 million pounds of nutritious food, including more than 85 million pounds of food rescued from growers and retailers. By strengthening our food rescue program and reducing our reliance on purchased food, we can continue to provide our clients with a nutritious mix of fresh produce, lean protein, dairy and whole grains.

The amount of rescued food is equivalent to taking nearly 10,000 passenger vehicles off the road for a year and saving enough water to fill over 3,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, according to the ReFED Insights Engine Impact Calculator.

Encouraging Well-being Through Food

In this high-cost area, many of our clients are forced to make difficult choices between paying for food and other necessities. Limited budgets come with limited nutritional options as well. Our team of nutrition managers and volunteer Health Ambassadors work out in the community and online, offering nutrition education, food tastings and cooking demonstrations so our clients have information that supports them in preparing nutritious, culturally relevant meals on a budget. Our Nutrition Team provided nearly 160 engaging food demos in the community where clients got a chance to participate in the prepping, cooking process and sampling of the recipes while having meaningful conversations to inspire new ways to use food bank staples.

“Sometimes I run out of ideas to make healthy recipes that my family enjoys. That's why I find these recipes so valuable.” - Second Harvest client and parent at Prospect High School

Advocating for a
Hunger-free Community

At a time when many in our community lost critical support, our advocacy team continued working to strengthen government systems that protect low-income households from food insecurity. In March 2023, more than 93,000 households in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties lost $16M of monthly grocery purchasing power when the pandemic-era CalFresh Emergency Allotments ended, averaging about $171 lost per household per month. Second Harvest joined other food banks to successfully advocate for a CalFresh minimum benefit increase at the state level, the pilot of which is estimated to begin in 2025. Our team also worked to secure summer EBT to provide low-income students with a food benefits card starting in the summer of 2024, and the expansion of the California Food Assistance Program starting in October 2025.
California's Attorney General Rob Bonta volunteering at Second Harvest.

Community Fundraisers Nourish Our Community

Last year, supporters created nearly 330 community fundraisers on behalf of Second Harvest. Children, families, businesses, schools, churches and other groups did incredible things to help build a hunger-free community. These fundraisers and their supporters raised over $1.4 million, helping to provide enough nutritious food for more than 2.8 million meals.

Rachel Isip

Outreach and Events Manager, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory

“This community fundraiser worked great for our hybrid office culture. It’s so much easier to send a link. The ease of use of these virtual platforms made it easier.”

Gail McFall

Head of Community Impact, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati

“We take pride in participating in volunteer projects with colleagues, hosting community fundraisers and making financial contributions to help provide meals for those who need them most.”

Leaving a Lasting Impact

Thank you to members of the Second Harvest Legacy Society for helping to end hunger in our community. Each Legacy Society member has included a gift to Second Harvest in their will, trust, retirement plan or insurance policy.

Alan Feinberg and his wife, Joan Weber, are motivated to give back to the community. When they relocated from Boston to the Bay Area in 1990 and learned how many people — especially families with children — were struggling with food insecurity, they were appalled. They were especially concerned that so many children struggled to get by without adequate nutrition.

Joan and Alan first encountered Second Harvest while volunteering at one of Alan’s corporate events. They were impressed by how much nutritious food would be provided for every dollar raised.

In 1993 they made their first donation and became devoted donors over the next 30 years. When it came time to think about leaving a legacy, it seemed logical to include a bequest from their estate naming Second Harvest as a significant beneficiary.

“We don’t have any children of our own.” shares Joan. “We want to ensure that children in the future have the same access to healthy food as we did when we were growing up. Leaving a legacy is our way of providing for multiple generations of kids.”
