Second Harvest Food Bank's Brown Bag Program distributes food to low-income seniors at various distribution sites thoughout Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. We are currently seeking volunteers committed to the Food Bank's mission in providing food for people in need in our community.

Home Delivery Driver

Location: Food distribution sites throughout Santa Clara County

Purpose: The purpose of the Brown Bag Delivery Program is to provide weekly groceries to our homebound, low-income seniors and disabled older adults.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid California Driver's License, proof of automobile insurance, and background check
  • Warm, enthusiastic, and personable
  • Experience working with seniors is a plus
  • Ability to lift at least 30 pounds

Training: Will be provided on Brown Bag home delivery process and customer service requirements.

Time Commitment: One to three hours per week depending upon the number of deliveries. Volunteers need to make a nine month commitment with allowance for vacation time.

Administrative Support

Location: Curtner Center (750 Curtner Avenue, San Jose)

Description: The Brown Bag Program is looking for Volunteers year round to help in a variety of ways. Current need is to help support the Program Coordinator with program tasks/projects related to client membership and volunteer data.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be computer literate
  • Must enjoy office work
  • Good attention to detail skills
  • Great Customer Service skills
  • Enjoy interfacing with seniors
  • Dependable

Commitment: A minimum of 3 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Day(s) of the week are flexible. Meaningful environment!

On-site Distribution Assistance

Description: Volunteers are needed to unload pallets of food with heavy boxes and bags, take the food in the room, help set-up and clean-up the food distribution.

Qualifications:

  • Likes working with seniors
  • Be in good physical health
  • Be able to lift heavy boxes and bags of food, repeated bending
  • Dependable and on time
  • Maintain safe working conditions and follow all safety rules
  • Professional conduct and responsibility
  • Helpful, but not required: speak Chinese, Tagalog, Russian, Vietnamese or Spanish
