Second Harvest Food Bank's Brown Bag Program distributes food to low-income seniors at various distribution sites throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. We are currently seeking volunteers committed to the Food Bank's mission in providing food for people in need in our community.

On-site Distribution Assistance

Description: Volunteers are needed to unload pallets of food with heavy boxes and bags, take the food in the room, help set-up and clean-up the food distribution.


  • Likes working with seniors
  • Be in good physical health
  • Be able to lift heavy boxes and bags of food, repeated bending
  • Dependable and on time
  • Maintain safe working conditions and follow all safety rules
  • Professional conduct and responsibility
  • Helpful, but not required: speak Chinese, Tagalog, Russian, Vietnamese or Spanish
  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Able to provide commitment of 3 months or more

Distribution Site Chair

The Site Chair facilitates the weekly distribution of food to Brown Bag members. They are appointed by the Food Bank program staff and work together regarding distribution processes, policies & procedures. Primary responsibilities include: directly oversee the distribution process at the distribution site, ensure that food is distributed in a fair, safe and timely manner and oversee record keeping such as roster attendance, hours reporting and/or membership applications and renewals.

They also are instrumental in recruiting and training new Brown Bag volunteers. Site Chairs with consultation from program staff may choose to delegate areas of responsibilities to other Brown Bag volunteers and occasionally there may be more than one Site Chair per Brown Bag location.


  • Friendly, patient person who enjoys interacting with seniors with diverse backgrounds
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to lead others
  • Good record keeping skills, good problem solver
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Maintain safe working conditions and follow all safety rules
  • Ability to perform with a high standard of customer service, professional conduct and responsibility
  • Helpful, but not required to speak Spanish, Vietnamese, or Chinese
  • Ability to attend mandatory quarterly meetings at the Food Bank
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Able to provide long-term commitment of 1 year or more
