  Story 1

Putting People First

We're so grateful to our network of nearly 330 partner agencies that help provide food to nearly a quarter million of our neighbors in need every month. Our Programs and Services staff enjoys organizing the Annual Harvest of Knowledge Partner Conference and this year was a milestone — our 10th! The conference is a chance for partner agencies to connect, learn, and celebrate local leaders committed to ending hunger.

First a Donor, Now a Volunteer

For Pat Putnam, it's important to know how a nonprofit organization is spending her monetary donations and she believes the easiest way to find out is to become a volunteer. That's what brought her to Second Harvest about twelve years ago and, lucky for us, she's still giving her time to keep an eye on the bottom line.

Get to know Pat.

Ugly Fruit Gets a Makeover

Thanks to farmers and grocery stores giving us produce they think won't sell, we're able to distribute more fresh fruits and vegetables than any other food bank in the country. Sometimes the produce is bruised, overripe, oddly shaped, or too big or small. Our nutritionists explain why "cosmetically challenged" produce is still quite perfect.

See the beauty.

A Foundation for a Healthy Life

Julie Hosfeldt works at the San Mateo County WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program where she helps make sure young children have all the nutrition resources available to them, including Food Bank programs and Calfresh. "Having the security of a healthy meal is very important in order to encourage positive, healthy development."

Meet Julie.

Social Media Roundup

Take a look at some tidbits that we shared, like an article about challenges nonprofits will face in accepting unsold food from Starbucks, or one detailing the impressive news that California agriculture contributed a record amount of produce to food banks. We also showed off the dashing, refrigerated truck that we purchased for St. Joseph's Family Center.

Catch up.
