Second Harvest's Third Facility is Open!
Second Harvest Food Bank has expanded with new warehouse and office space. Our new 75,000 square foot facility has nearly doubled overall space and will allow us to increase our food distribution capacity by at least 50% over the next five years.
Cypress Semiconductor donated the space at 4001 North First Street in San Jose on five acres of land to Second Harvest Food Bank in June 2011, enabling us to start construction in mid-September. Physical renovations were completed in April of 2012 and we held our first volunteer food sort in the new space on April 23rd.
The Food Bank has been struggling to address physical capacity limitations for some time, and this truly transformative gift will allow us to provide increased amounts of nutritious produce to members of our community.
In addition to enabling fresh produce warehousing and distribution, the building is now our new Santa Clara County volunteer services hub. The site provides the Food Bank with a presence in the heart of Silicon Valley, located 10 miles from our Curtner Avenue Center in San Jose and 20 miles from our Bing Street Center in San Carlos.
We are still growing into our new facility and look forward to hosting a community open house in early September. In the meantime, you can sign up for a volunteer food sort, take a tour, or view pictures of construction progress.
