Agency Relations: Checkout Office and Warehouse Volunteer

Location: Curtner Center (750 Curtner Ave., San Jose)

Description: Second Harvest Food Bank depends on their Partner Agencies to help get food to low-income individuals and families. These non-profit organizations, which include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and kids programs, receive most of their food from Second Harvest Food Bank Monday through Friday. Volunteers are needed to help with the distribution of the food from our warehouse out to the Partner Agencies.

We are currently looking for ongoing Checkout Office and Warehouse Volunteers to assist with greeting agencies, helping them make food selections, and check food orders for accuracy. This position will also help provide assistance in assuring the agency shopping area is neat and orderly, which may require lifting, cleaning, and stocking the area with food supplies. This volunteer would assist in the creation of food order invoices on a computer, filing and organizing paperwork, and informing agencies of any special offerings and nutrition resources. If you enjoy an environment that allows you to work in a warehouse and in an office, this is the position for you.

Accounts Receivable or Administrative Support in Finance

Location: Cypress Center (4001 N. First Street, San Jose)

Supports: Finance Department

Description: Help is needed in our Finance Department with various tasks. If you have experience in Accounts Receivable, like to work with numbers, and are detailed oriented, we need you! We are looking for volunteers year-round. Help is needed with assisting cash receipting, computerized batching and scanning of checks, updating cash register, making copies, faxing, scanning documents, and maintaining files.

Hours: Minimum of 4 hours per week Monday - Friday. Days and times of the week are flexible. We will request to obtain credit, background, and reference check.

Agency Monitor Volunteer

Location: Santa Clara County/Curtner Center (750 Curtner Ave., San Jose)

Description: The Agency Relations team needs assistance in monitoring our nonprofit partner agencies. This involves inspecting the cooking, storage, and food preparation of our partners' facilities. A background in food preparation, nutrition, or food safety is a plus. Any nutrition or dietician experience would also be helpful. We will provide the basic training in Food Bank policies and procedures and how to document the monitor. We will also provide a one-hour class on food safety. After training, volunteer will perform the monitors independently. Must be willing to travel to sites with personal vehicle. Agencies are located throughout Santa Clara County.

Hours: 2-3 hours per week (can be more); schedule is flexible. Would prefer during the weekday. Minimum of 3 month commitment.

Donor Appreciation and Database Assistant

Location: Cypress Center (4001 N. First Street, San Jose)

Supports: Gift Processing and Operations Team

Description: This position is responsible for providing support to the Gift Processing and Donors Operations Team. This position requires excellent donor/customer service, computer proficiency, and extreme attention to detail and flexibility.

Duties include:

  1. Printing and mailing donor thank you letters
  2. Identifying and merging dulpicate donor records
  3. donor database cleanup project
  4. provide general support to Development Operations Coordinator


  1. Basic skills with a computer, Microsoft Word, and the Internet
  2. Desire and ability to pay meticulous attention to detail

Hours: A minimum 3-month commitment of 3-4 hours per week on Thursdays.

Drives and Donor Services Assistant

Location: Cypress Center (4001 N. First Street, San Jose)

Supports: Food and Fund Drive/Donor Services Team

Description: This position is responsible for providing support to the Food and Fund Drive/Donor Services team. This position requires excellent donor/customer service, creativity, and extreme attention to detail and flexibility.

Duties include:

  1. Making thank you calls to supporters (No solicitation required)
  2. Writing thank you cards to supporters
  3. Close work orders
  4. Process food and fund drive enrollments
  5. Correspond to potential Food and Fund Drive Hosts
  6. Assist with scheduling of barrel delivery and pickup
  7. Provide general support to Food and Fund Drive Coordinator and Donor Services Specialist

Hours: Hours are flexible anytime between 10am-5pm Monday through Friday. Open for discussion.

Administrative Support: Finance

Location: Curtner Center (San Jose)

Supports: Chief Financial Officer

Description: The CFO is seeking a volunteer that can help two hours a week for the first month, and one hour a week from then on. Preferred hours are later in the afternoon and later in the week. Main responsibilities are typing, filing, and alphabetizing. Volunteer should be able to take direction, read and write in English, and work as a team member as well as independently. Organizational skills a plus! Great environment!

Food Connection Hotline Operator

Description: Volunteer with the CalFresh and Food Connection Teams! Help combat hunger and address food insecurity by working with the Outreach team to educate the community about the CalFresh (Food Stamp) program and other available food resources. The Food Connection Hotline Operator will assist callers by providing referrals for food assistance.

Location: Curtner Center (750 Curtner Ave., San Jose)

Supports: Food Connection, a food referral hotline to connect people seeking food assistance.

Hours: Flexible 3-hour shifts between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Volunteer positions with Food Connection require a commitment of 3 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months.


  • Must be bi-lingual in English/Spanish or English/Vietnamese
  • Excellent customer-service skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations
