Front Desk Guest Service and Administrative Volunteer

Location: Bing Center – 1051 Bing Street, San Carlos 94070

Description: Our San Mateo County Warehouse in San Carlos is currently looking for a cheerful volunteer to assist with customer service and administrative tasks. As we expand our services to members around San Mateo County we have seen an increased need at the front desk to assist with in person and over the phone customer service. As the Front Desk Administrative Volunteer would help in answering phones, accepting donations, receiving and distributing mail and data entry for direct service programs.

This volunteer opportunity might be for you if:

  • You absolutely love helping people!
  • You are passionate and persistent in finding answers for our community members.
  • You have a high attention to detail and is the type of person who doesn’t easily get overwhelmed by paperwork or data entry.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a guest facing positon.
  • Ability to interact with all types of people and provide excellent customer service.
  • On top of it, with excellent communication skills.
  • Dependable, we can rely on you for a 3 hour shift once a week.

Front Desk Volunteer

Location: Cypress Center – 4001 North First Street, San Jose CA 95134

Description: Are you interested in lending your talents to a dynamic and fast-paced office environment? Second Harvest Food Bank is seeking volunteers to support our Cypress Center front desk on Wednesdays and Thursdays! During your 4-hour shift once per week, you may contribute to a variety of different projects and meet an innumerable amount of wonderful people along the way. You'll use your excellent customer service skills to assist both internal and external customers alike, all while helping us grow toward accomplishing our mission.

Hours: Flexible from 8am - 5pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays

Donor Relations Volunteer

Location: Cypress Center – 4001 North First Street, San Jose CA 95134

Description: Are you friendly, upbeat, and looking to make a difference in our community? We're looking for someone with excellent customer service skills, attention to detail, and a desire to interact with our most loyal supporters to help with our donor stewardship program.

Help is needed with a variety of administrative tasks, with specific emphasis on thank you calls and handwritten letters to our donors. If you aren't afraid to jump on the phone and interact with donors, but also don't mind a more quiet setting writing letters, mailing postcards, or completing data entry, then this opportunity would be great for you!

Hours: Flexible, 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday.

Agency Check-in Volunteer: San Mateo County

Location: Various partner community agencies throughout San Mateo County

Description: A volunteer is needed to check in partner agencies that come in to pick up orders and shop in the warehouse. This volunteer would process orders on the computer and assist with loading, as well as accept donations as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Thorough and attentive to details
  • Computer friendly
  • Able to handle light lifting (up to 25 pounds)
  • Able to use pallet jack

Hours: Ongoing, every Friday from 7:30am - 11:30am.

Agency Monitor Volunteer: San Mateo County

Location: Various partner community agencies throughout San Mateo County

Description: A requirement of the Food Bank is to have every partner agency inspected every two years to ensure safe food storage and preparation. As a Partner Agency Monitor Volunteer you will help by inspecting selected partnering agencies. Monitoring takes about 1 hour.

Training: Partner Agency Monitors receive 4 to 6 hours of hands on training by a Second Harvest Partner Agency Manager where you will go to a partner agency and learn proper form preparation and the specifics of inspection details.

Qualifications:

  • Not necessary but helpful - a background in food preparation and handling is a plus
  • Not necessary but helpful - nutrition or dietician experience
  • Able to attend pre training
  • Comfortable working independently as well as part of a team with a diverse population
  • Professional representation with ability to legibly complete the documentation process
  • Able to commit to one year of volunteer work, use own transportation
  • Able to volunteer during working hours Monday-Friday between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm
  • 18 years or older

Hours: Must be able to commit to a minimum of 2 hours per month over a span of one year.

Food Connection Hotline Operator

Description: Volunteer with the CalFresh and Food Connection Teams! Help combat hunger and address food insecurity by working with the Outreach team to educate the community about the CalFresh (Food Stamp) program and other available food resources. The Food Connection Hotline Operator will assist callers by providing referrals for food assistance.

Location: Curtner Center (750 Curtner Ave., San Jose)

Supports: Food Connection, a food referral hotline to connect people seeking food assistance.

Hours: Flexible 3-hour shifts between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Volunteer positions with Food Connection require a commitment of 3 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months.

Qualifications:

  • Must be bi-lingual in English/Spanish or English/Vietnamese
  • Excellent customer-service skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Ability to use the computer
  • Age 18+ years
  • Participate in on-the-job training provided by Second Harvest Food Bank staff

Note: Appropriate for individuals and small groups.
