Summer is almost here. But for many Food Bank families, it is an unwelcome break. Summer means the 1 in 3 students who rely on free and reduced-price school meals will suddenly struggle to eat. Mohammed and Yusif are two of the children who fear the ring of the last school bell because it signals the end of the school year and the beginning of hunger. Their caring, articulate mother, Rewaida, painfully expressed the moment she knew she had to reach out for help:
"Until recently we had never gone without. That all changed when my husband was diagnosed with cancer and was no longer able to work. I knew we hit bottom when I opened the refrigerator door one day and it was empty."
Like any parent, Rewaida wants to provide her children with a solid foundation for a healthy life. She wants them to enjoy their childhood rather than worrying about where their next meal will come from:
"Luckily, I learned about Second Harvest Food Bank's Family Harvest program. Although feeding my kids will be an even bigger challenge this summer when they won't have access to the free meals they get at school, I know my refrigerator won't be empty because of the generous people of this community." –Rewaida
