An diesem Dienstag kehrte ich zu meiner Highschool Woodside Priory zur\u00fcck, die 2018 den Make Hunger History Bumper Crop Award gewann. Jede Woche versammeln sich die Sch\u00fcler in der Kapelle und h\u00f6ren einem \u201eKapellengespr\u00e4ch\u201c zu, einer pers\u00f6nlichen Ansprache, die h\u00e4ufig von einem Mitglied der Schulgemeinschaft gehalten wird. An diesem Tag des Gebens lud mich das Priorat ein, \u00fcber den Dienst zu sprechen.<\/p>\n

Die Mitarbeiter von Second Harvest erhalten h\u00e4ufig Gelegenheit, unsere Effizienz, Ern\u00e4hrungsrichtlinien und 260.000 Menschen zu besprechen, die jeden Monat bedient werden. Diese Rede bot jedoch die Gelegenheit, die Emotionen zu erkl\u00e4ren, die die beeindruckenden Statistiken inspirieren.<\/p>\n

Meine Botschaft bestand darin, den Service sinnvoll zu gestalten.<\/p>\n

R\u00fcckblickend war Priory ein unglaublicher Ort mit einer Umgebung zum Experimentieren und Entdecken von Leidenschaften. Meine Klassenkameraden wurden ermutigt, sowohl Sportler als auch Darsteller zu sein, und f\u00fcr jeden Verein, jede Klasse oder Aktivit\u00e4t aufzutauchen bedeutete, von f\u00fcrsorglichen Lehrern und Freunden begr\u00fc\u00dft zu werden. Diese Unterst\u00fctzung war nicht nur oberfl\u00e4chlich - als meine Mutter ein Gesundheitsproblem hatte, blieb ich in Ferien wie Thanksgiving und Weihnachten bei Klassenkameraden. Lehrer, deren Unterricht ich noch nie besucht hatte, meldeten sich den ganzen Tag bei mir. Diese Umgebung gipfelte in der Gelegenheit, ein gesundes Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck f\u00fcr das Peninsula Bridge Program zu kochen, eine College-Zugangsorganisation f\u00fcr unterversorgte Studenten.<\/p>\n

Von diesem Punkt an untersuchte ich die Zusammenh\u00e4nge zwischen Essen und Service. Ein auff\u00e4lliger Moment ereignete sich bei der Arbeit in einer K\u00fcche in Frankreich.\u00a0\u00a0Ich arbeitete unter erfahrenen, in Frankreich geborenen K\u00f6chen und lernte zusammen mit Kommissionsmitgliedern, die k\u00fcrzlich aus Algerien, Senegal und Brasilien ausgewandert waren. Diese beiden Gruppen schienen au\u00dferhalb der K\u00fcche unvereinbar zu sein. Ein \u00e4lterer Konditor beschrieb die internationalen Filme, die er mit seiner Frau gesehen hatte, w\u00e4hrend Commis Reste f\u00fcr ihre Geschwister packte, bevor er in beengte Wohnungen am Stadtrand von Paris reiste. Unsere K\u00fcche verband sich jedoch durch Respekt vor dem gegenseitigen Engagement (und manchmal auch vor Fu\u00dfball oder Rihanna). Wenn die K\u00f6che die G\u00e4ste einluden, um Wein zu trinken, servierten sie uns gleichzeitig und kramten in den K\u00fcchen nach Limonaden f\u00fcr die muslimischen K\u00f6che. Auf der anderen Seite verga\u00dfen die G\u00e4ste das Commis weitgehend, als sie mit den K\u00f6chen Fotos machten. Nur ein Mann n\u00e4herte sich jemals unserer Geschirrsp\u00fclecke und sch\u00fcttelte uns mit einem Dankesch\u00f6n die Hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ich denke immer noch an diese seltene Geste der Empathie, denn dieser Mann \u00fcbersah die Grenzen, die Menschen zwischen sich und anderen ziehen. Annahmen \u00fcber Klasse, Rasse, Nationalit\u00e4t und Bildung machen wesentliche Mitwirkende unsichtbar, aber dieser Kunde erkannte unsere Bedeutung an. Hier sah ich die Mauern zwischen denen, die dienen, und denen, die gedient werden. Ich habe geschworen, immer im Dienst anderer zu sein.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ich schloss meine Rede mit der Er\u00f6rterung der Bedeutung, die ich bei Second Harvest finde. Ich verlie\u00df die High School und dachte, dass Second Harvest ein Lagerhaus f\u00fcr Konserven sei, und ich wollte nicht dasselbe f\u00fcr diese Sch\u00fcler. Eine zweite Ernteverteilung ist auch das Vertrauen, das zwischen Kunden und Freiwilligen aufgebaut wird. Ich habe einmal ein \u00e4lteres chinesisches Ehepaar getroffen, das ein Leben lang in der Fischerei und in Hotels gearbeitet hat, um schnell leere Kisten mit Produkten aufzubrechen. Schlie\u00dflich baten diese Kunden einen jungen Freiwilligen, ihnen eine Referenz f\u00fcr das Altersheim zu schreiben, das sie gemeinsam betreten wollten. Die Universalit\u00e4t von Lebensmitteln erm\u00f6glicht diese interkulturellen Verbindungen. F\u00fcr einander unsichtbare Gruppen werden Freunde.<\/p>\n

Ich finde meine Arbeit bei Second Harvest aufgrund von Geschichten lohnend. Hier sehe ich die Schnittstellen von Ungleichheit, Essen und Kultur deutlicher als je zuvor. Die Art und Weise, wie Menschen miteinander umgehen und ihr Essen erhalten, ist so komplex. Und diese Position hat gefestigt, wie Service ein Teil des Alltags sein sollte.<\/p>\n<\/div>
