Fighting Hunger on Campuses

In a recent San Jose State University Food Access Survey, 50% of students said that they sometimes or often cut the size of meals or skipped meals because they didn't have enough money. Second Harvest's Just-in-Time Mobile Food Pantry brings more than 10,000 pounds of food to the SJSU campus and the line of students grows every month.

No New Funding for Child Nutrition Programs

Despite efforts by anti-hunger organizations, the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act that governs many federal nutrition programs for low-income children was not reauthorized in 2016. While these programs will continue, the ability to make new investments and improvements to these programs will be extremely limited.

Last month, we shared articles about the lack of investment in local nonprofits by Silicon Valley philanthropists, as well as a decrease in donations to food banks, despite increasing need.
