Cada semana, los estudiantes se re\u00fanen en la capilla y escuchan una \u201ccharla en la capilla\u201d, un discurso personal que suele dar un miembro de la comunidad escolar. En este d\u00eda de donaciones, el Priorato me invit\u00f3 a hablar sobre el servicio.<\/p>\n<p>El personal de Second Harvest recibe oportunidades frecuentes para discutir nuestra eficiencia, pautas de nutrici\u00f3n y 260,000 personas atendidas cada mes. A mis compa\u00f1eros de clase se les animaba a ser tanto atletas como artistas, y asistir a cualquier club, clase o actividad significaba ser bienvenidos por profesores y amigos cari\u00f1osos. Este apoyo no fue solo superficial: cuando mi madre pas\u00f3 por un problema de salud, me qued\u00e9 en casa de mis compa\u00f1eros de clase durante las vacaciones como Acci\u00f3n de Gracias y Navidad. Los profesores cuyas clases nunca hab\u00eda tomado se comunicaban conmigo durante todo el d\u00eda. Este ambiente culmin\u00f3 con la oportunidad de preparar un desayuno saludable para el Programa Peninsula Bridge, una organizaci\u00f3n de acceso a la universidad para estudiantes desatendidos.<\/p>\n<p>A partir de este momento, investigu\u00e9 los v\u00ednculos entre comida y servicio. Un momento sorprendente ocurri\u00f3 mientras trabajaba en una cocina en Francia.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Trabaj\u00e9 con chefs experimentados nacidos en Francia y aprend\u00ed junto a compa\u00f1eros de comisi\u00f3n, aprendices de bajo nivel que hab\u00edan emigrado recientemente de Argelia, Senegal y Brasil. Estos dos grupos parec\u00edan incompatibles fuera de la cocina, con un chef de reposter\u00eda mayor describiendo las pel\u00edculas internacionales que ve\u00eda con su esposa mientras comis empacaba las sobras para sus hermanos antes de viajar a apartamentos abarrotados en las afueras de Par\u00eds. Sin embargo, nuestra cocina se uni\u00f3 a trav\u00e9s del respeto por la dedicaci\u00f3n de los dem\u00e1s (y, a veces, el f\u00fatbol o Rihanna). Cuando los chefs invitaban a los clientes a quedarse a tomar vino, nos serv\u00edan al mismo tiempo, hurgando en las cocinas en busca de refrescos para los cocineros musulmanes. Por otro lado, los clientes se olvidaron en gran medida de las comisiones mientras tomaban fotos con los chefs. Solo un hombre se acerc\u00f3 a nuestro rinc\u00f3n de lavado de platos y nos estrech\u00f3 la mano con un agradecimiento.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Todav\u00eda pienso en este raro gesto de empat\u00eda, porque este hombre pas\u00f3 por alto los l\u00edmites que las personas trazan entre ellos y los dem\u00e1s. Las suposiciones sobre clase, raza, nacionalidad y educaci\u00f3n hacen que los contribuyentes esenciales sean invisibles, pero este cliente reconoci\u00f3 nuestra importancia. Aqu\u00ed vi los muros construidos entre los que sirven y los que son servidos. Promet\u00ed estar siempre al servicio de los dem\u00e1s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Conclu\u00ed mi discurso discutiendo el significado que encuentro en Second Harvest. Dej\u00e9 la escuela secundaria pensando que Second Harvest era un almac\u00e9n de comida enlatada y no quer\u00eda lo mismo para estos estudiantes. Una distribuci\u00f3n Second Harvest es tambi\u00e9n la confianza que se genera entre clientes y voluntarios. Una vez conoc\u00ed a una pareja china de edad avanzada que pas\u00f3 toda su vida trabajando en la pesca y los hoteles para romper r\u00e1pidamente cajas vac\u00edas de productos. Finalmente, estos clientes le pidieron a un joven voluntario que les escribiera una referencia para la casa de retiro en la que esperaban entrar juntos. La universalidad de los alimentos permite que se produzcan estas conexiones interculturales. Los grupos invisibles entre s\u00ed se vuelven amigos.<\/p>\n<p>Encuentro mi trabajo en Second Harvest gratificante debido a las historias. Aqu\u00ed, veo las intersecciones de desigualdad, comida y cultura m\u00e1s claramente que nunca. Existe una gran complejidad en la forma en que las personas interact\u00faan y reciben su comida.
