El primer recuerdo de inseguridad alimentaria de Alys Milner es cuando ten\u00eda 9 a\u00f1os y no hab\u00eda comida en la casa.<\/p>\n

"Era la noche anterior al d\u00eda de pago y mi madre estaba literalmente sin comida", dijo. "Recuerdo que ella hizo galletas con harina y agua, y los cuatro sentados alrededor de la mesa, sacando mermelada del frasco".<\/p>\n

"Es aterrador no saber si habr\u00e1 comida", dijo Alys.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sacrificar alimentos nutritivos para la vivienda.<\/p><\/h2><\/div>

"Mi madre prioriz\u00f3 tener un techo sobre nuestras cabezas en lugar de comida, al igual que muchas familias se ven obligadas a hacerlo ahora", dijo. "Yo har\u00eda lo mismo".<\/p>\n

Alys naci\u00f3 en Canad\u00e1 y se mud\u00f3 a California en 1966 con su familia, su madre, su padre y sus dos hermanas. Pero cuando sus visas se despejaron, la guarder\u00eda que hab\u00eda contratado a su padre se declar\u00f3 en bancarrota. La familia pas\u00f3 un a\u00f1o entero sin ingresos.<\/p>\n

"Hab\u00edamos vendido nuestra casa en Canad\u00e1, pero utilizamos la mayor\u00eda de nuestros ahorros ese primer a\u00f1o", dijo. \u201cPap\u00e1 finalmente volvi\u00f3 a ponerse de pie, pero un a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s le diagnosticaron c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n. Su padre muri\u00f3 cuando Alys ten\u00eda 9 a\u00f1os y sus hermanas ten\u00edan 8 y 14 a\u00f1os. Su madre estaba sola en un nuevo pa\u00eds con tres hijos.<\/p>\n

"Estaba mi madre, todos sus ahorros se hab\u00edan ido", dijo Alys. \u201cMis padres trabajaron duro, compraron una casa en Canad\u00e1. Pero entonces a mi pap\u00e1 no le pagan durante un a\u00f1o y le da c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n. \u00bfC\u00f3mo es culpa de alguno de estos eventos? Es por eso que me molesta cuando la gente dice: 'si solo se esforzaran m\u00e1s'. Mis padres se esforzaron mucho ".<\/p>\n

Finalmente, su madre consigui\u00f3 un trabajo en San Francisco como mecan\u00f3grafa. Pero el dinero era escaso y quedaba poco para la comida.<\/p>\n

\u201cViv\u00edamos en un apartamento de dos habitaciones en Millbrae; solo nosotros cuatro compartiendo un peque\u00f1o departamento \u201d, dijo. \u201cNo ten\u00edamos auto, ni televisi\u00f3n. Si me enfermaba, me sent\u00eda tan culpable. No ten\u00edamos seguro m\u00e9dico. Mam\u00e1 tendr\u00eda que establecer un plan de pago ".<\/p>\n

Alys tambi\u00e9n tuvo problemas con la inseguridad alimentaria en la universidad. Trabaj\u00f3 a tiempo parcial en un trabajo de salario m\u00ednimo mientras asist\u00eda a la escuela a tiempo completo. Recibi\u00f3 una licenciatura en artes teatrales con \u00e9nfasis en el dise\u00f1o de vestuario.<\/p>\n

"Trabaj\u00e9 en la oficina del teatro y hab\u00eda una mujer all\u00ed que me salvar\u00eda sus galletas", dijo. "Si me invitaban a una fiesta, se trataba de la comida".<\/p>\n

Ahora casada y con dos hijos, Alys vive una vida modesta y se concentra en ayudar a los dem\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Un lugar seguro para las mujeres.<\/p><\/h2><\/div>

Ella es voluntaria para Front Door Communities, una de las agencias asociadas de Second Harvest. Second Harvest distribuye alimentos a trav\u00e9s de una red de 309 socios sin fines de lucro, que incluyen escuelas, despensas, centros comunitarios y refugios. Front Door Communities tiene su sede en el centro de San Jos\u00e9 y atiende a personas sin hogar. Alys pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo trabajando en el centro para mujeres de Lifted Spirits.<\/p>\n

"Ofrecemos un lugar seguro para que las mujeres salgan de las calles por una tarde", dijo. \u201cLas mujeres a menudo son v\u00edctimas de abuso f\u00edsico. Es dif\u00edcil para ellos mantenerse a salvo. Tenemos una habitaci\u00f3n tranquila donde pueden dormir con seguridad ".<\/p>\n

El centro de atenci\u00f3n Lifted Spirits est\u00e1 abierto tres d\u00edas a la semana y atiende de 25 a 40 mujeres por d\u00eda. Las mujeres pueden obtener una comida caliente y seleccionar hasta ocho art\u00edculos de una despensa en el lugar que Second Harvest ayuda a mantener abastecida con alimentos enlatados y otros art\u00edculos que se pueden comer sin necesidad de una cocina. Las mujeres tambi\u00e9n pueden tomar uno de los almuerzos en bolsas que Front Door Communities ofrece a cualquiera que lo necesite: hombres y mujeres.<\/p>\n
