By uniting multiple warehouses and offices into a single, energy-efficient facility, the organization will be able to distribute more nutritious food to more neighbors facing food insecurity, respond swiftly in times of crisis, and ensure the food bank remains a reliable source of support for the community today while positioning it to create lasting impact for decades to come.<\/p>\n<p>Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new home will be the heart of our work \u2014 where food, staff, volunteers and hope come together for our community,\u201d said Leslie Bacho, CEO of Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. \u201cIt will allow us to serve more families with dignity today, while also giving us the capacity to prepare for tomorrow. We&#8217;ve always known hunger is a challenge we can solve when we work together, and this milestone shows what\u2019s possible when our community unites to ensure we all have the nutritious food we need to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The new headquarters will feature:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>215,000-square-foot facility with increased capacity for cold and dry storage<\/li>\n<li>Larger loading dock area to speed up food distribution<\/li>\n<li>Expanded warehouse space and parking to accommodate larger volunteer groups<\/li>\n<li>Future-forward infrastructure and energy-conscious systems, including rooftop solar panels, CO\u2082 refrigeration, LEED certification and a high-performance building envelope to improve energy efficiency and durability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This increased capacity is essential. In Silicon Valley, where food insecurity is higher than the national average, a staggering 1 in 6 neighbors turn to the food bank for support. Half of those served are children and seniors. Many working families still can\u2019t make ends meet due to the region\u2019s high cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent Second Harvest client survey, the majority of households reported at least one person working, yet nearly 60% said they still couldn\u2019t cover monthly expenses. When budgets are tight, food is often the first thing cut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we continue to serve elevated levels of need, this new facility strengthens our ability to operate efficiently at scale,\u201d said Bacho. \u201cIt will allow us to get more nutritious food to the hundreds of thousands of people who rely on us each month, while making the most of every dollar and every donation. By centralizing our operations, we can serve our network of over 400 partners across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties more effectively, reaching neighbors where they live and work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new building is projected to save the food bank millions annually through greater efficiency.
