Nutrition in Action: Making Unfamiliar Produce Prep Easy Through Photos

“Nutrition in Action” is a series focused on what our Nutrition team is up to in the community.

Special Blog Post By: Luiza Naslausky, Nutrition Education Coordinator, Santa Clara County

As you know, we serve many members from different nationalities. Because of that, our Nutrition team is always equipped with information and recipes in different languages, like Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, Korean, and Farsi.

But what happens when we are not at the food distribution site ? And what if, on that day, the members get spaghetti squash?  The combination of unfamiliar produce with language barriers might not yield a very positive outcome.

Because of this, we created our “Unfamiliar Produce” posters!  The posters contain photos showing step-by-step instructions on how to cook that food item. They are very straightforward, beautiful and informative!

The winter fresh produce stars are already around – butternut squash, delicata squash, acorn squash, spaghetti squash and eggplant.  We also have a brown rice poster!

Here are a few of the posters:

We recently started working on posters for our spring fresh produce. We’ll keep you “posted” on when they’re ready!
