Elke week verzamelen de studenten zich in de kapel en luisteren naar een &#039;kapellezing&#039;, een persoonlijk adres dat vaak wordt gegeven door een lid van de schoolgemeenschap. Op deze dag van geven nodigde de Priorij me uit om over de dienst te spreken.<\/p>\n<p>Medewerkers van Second Harvest krijgen regelmatig de gelegenheid om onze effici\u00ebntie, voedingsrichtlijnen en 260.000 mensen per maand te bespreken. Mijn klasgenoten werden aangemoedigd om zowel atleten als artiesten te zijn, en om voor elke club, klas of activiteit op te komen, werd ze verwelkomd door zorgzame leraren en vrienden. Deze ondersteuning was niet alleen oppervlakkig - toen mijn moeder een gezondheidsprobleem doormaakte, verbleef ik bij klasgenoten tijdens vakanties zoals Thanksgiving en Kerstmis. Leraren wiens lessen ik nooit had gevolgd, kwamen de hele dag bij me langs. Deze omgeving culmineerde in de mogelijkheid om een gezond ontbijt te bereiden voor het Peninsula Bridge Program, een organisatie voor toegang tot de universiteit voor achtergestelde studenten.<\/p>\n<p>Vanaf dit punt heb ik de verbanden tussen eten en service onderzocht. Een opvallend moment vond plaats tijdens het werken in een keuken in Frankrijk.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Ik werkte onder ervaren, in Frankrijk geboren chef-koks en leerde samen met andere commis-low-level stagiaires die onlangs waren ge\u00ebmigreerd uit Algerije, Senegal en Brazili\u00eb. Deze twee groepen leken buiten de keuken onverenigbaar, met een oudere banketbakker die de internationale films beschreef die hij met zijn vrouw bekeek, terwijl de commis restjes voor hun broers en zussen inpakte voordat ze naar krappe appartementen aan de rand van Parijs reisden. Onze keuken is echter verbonden door respect voor elkaars toewijding (en soms voetbal of Rihanna). Als de chef-koks mecenassen uitnodigden om voor wijn te blijven, serveerden ze ons tegelijkertijd terwijl ze door de keukens snuffelden voor frisdrank voor de moslimkoks. Aan de andere kant waren klanten de commis grotendeels vergeten tijdens het maken van foto&#039;s met de chef-koks. Slechts \u00e9\u00e9n man kwam ooit naar onze afwashoek en schudde ons de hand met een bedankje.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ik denk nog steeds aan dit zeldzame gebaar van empathie, want deze man zag de grenzen over die mensen trekken tussen zichzelf en anderen. Aannames over klasse, ras, nationaliteit en opleiding maken essenti\u00eble bijdragers onzichtbaar, maar deze klant erkende ons belang. Hier zag ik de muren gebouwd tussen degenen die dienen en degenen die worden bediend. Ik heb gezworen altijd anderen te dienen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ik sloot mijn toespraak af met een bespreking van de betekenis die ik vind bij Second Harvest. Ik verliet de middelbare school omdat ik dacht dat Second Harvest een opslagplaats was voor ingeblikt voedsel, en ik wilde niet hetzelfde voor deze studenten. Een Second Harvest-distributie is ook het vertrouwen dat ontstaat tussen klanten en vrijwilligers. Ik ontmoette ooit een ouder Chinees stel dat een leven lang in de visserij en hotels werkte om snel lege dozen met producten af te breken. Uiteindelijk vroegen deze cli\u00ebnten een jonge vrijwilliger om hen een referentie te schrijven voor het bejaardentehuis dat ze samen hoopten binnen te gaan. Door de universaliteit van voedsel kunnen deze interculturele verbindingen ontstaan. Groepen die voor elkaar onzichtbaar zijn, worden vrienden.<\/p>\n<p>Ik vind mijn werk bij Second Harvest lonend vanwege verhalen. Hier zie ik de kruispunten van ongelijkheid, voedsel en cultuur duidelijker dan ooit tevoren. Er is zo&#039;n complexiteit in hoe mensen omgaan en hun voedsel ontvangen.
