'Als Second Harvest me niet van verse boodschappen had voorzien, had mijn focus misschien veranderd. Ik probeerde mijn leven te herstellen voordat mijn zoon werd geboren. Second Harvest gaf me consistente, frisse en gezonde voeding. \u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Hier bij Second Harvest bedienen we elke maand 127.000 kinderen in de hoop dat ze allemaal sterk en gezond kunnen opgroeien. Alex is een alleenstaande moeder die voor het eerst voedselhulp kreeg nadat ze hoorde over haar zwangerschap. Destijds had ze te maken met dakloosheid en drugsgebruik. Door te genieten van voedsel van Second Harvest via een gaarkeuken, een intern herstelprogramma en boodschappenbedeling, ontwikkelde Alex een nieuwe relatie met haar gezondheid en voeding. Nu is ze afgestudeerd aan de universiteit en volgt ze een carri\u00e8re\/vervolgopleiding in het strafrecht.<\/strong><\/p>\n

De maaltijden van Alex bestonden vroeger uit bezoeken aan de winkel op de hoek, waar een snack vergezeld ging van een groot blikje gezoete thee. Toen ze hoorde over haar zwangerschap, had ze een zelf beschreven ontwaken. Alex erkent dat het overwinnen van middelenmisbruik meer vereist dan een enkele beslissing, maar ze hechtte die dag een nieuw belang aan gezondheid.<\/p>\n

Een vriendin nam haar mee naar een gewaardeerde Second Harvest-partner,\u00a0St. Anthony's Padua Eetkamer<\/a>. Langzaam de bezette eetzaal binnenkomend, voelde Alex zowel comfort als onzekerheid, vreugde en schaamte. Ze voelde zich op elk moment klaar om te vertrekken, maar kleine details verwelkomden haar. De glimlachende gezichten van de vrijwilligers, zelfgemaakte geuren en dienbladen met aardappelpuree en mac n 'cheese gaven troost.<\/p>\n

Een overvloed aan verse groenten en fruit helpt klanten bij het bereiden van gezonde maaltijden.<\/p><\/div>\n

Alex hoorde van onze kruideniersdistributie in St. Anthony's en beval haar vriend om een koelkast te zoeken, die ze uiteindelijk in het magazijn dat ze bezetten, installeerde. Alex merkte een verandering in haar leven op waarbij gezonde voeding een prioriteit werd, en herinnerde zich:<\/p>\n

\u201cSecond Harvest heeft me een manier gegeven om me opnieuw te concentreren op mijn voeding. Het was zo gemakkelijk verkrijgbaar en gratis, gekookt in mijn gemeenschap. Omdat de Voedselbank om mijn gezondheid gaf, moest ik om mijn gezondheid geven. '<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Met een magnetron, koelkast en uitstapjes voor warme maaltijden vervingen voedzame voedingsmiddelen de snacks in de hoekwinkel. Uiteindelijk belde Alex haar reclasseringsambtenaar en vroeg om een herstelprogramma in te voeren.<\/p>\n

Op haar eerste dag ging Alex 'winkelen' in ons Bing Center, waar kleinere partnerbureaus de etenswaren bezoeken en ophalen die ze nodig hebben. Onder de indruk van de organisatie, schaal en effici\u00ebntie van het magazijn, herinnert ze zich een geweldige eerste indruk van Second Harvest.<\/p>\n

Terug in de keuken voelde Alex zich zenuwachtig over haar eerste diner, totdat de heerlijke geuren haar troostten. Paprika's en uien sisden en het pikant van gedroogde kruiden kwam van kip op de grill. Alex voelde zich 'de nieuwe jongen op de speelplaats' en hoorde dat een van de kokende vrouwen deze fajita's jarenlang voor haar gezin had klaargemaakt. Samen brood breken vormde verbindingen tussen deze vreemden en nieuwe huisgenoten.<\/p>\n

Een paar jaar later, nadat haar zoon was geboren, begon Alex te werken om financi\u00eble steun te verlenen aan studenten. Alex woonde bij een El Salvadoriaans gezin en had een band met een constant kokende grootmoeder. Alex ging naar een distributie op een plaatselijke basisschool en bracht meer dan genoeg eten mee om te delen met haar huisgenoten. Samen dansend in de keuken leerde Alex met haar nieuwe vrienden de poppen op tijd vormgeven op muziek. In de kersttijd vonden Alex en haar zoon hun namen op kousen op de open haard.<\/p>\n

Sparen en werken, Alex stopte uiteindelijk met het ontvangen van voedsel van Second Harvest. Onlangs studeerde ze af aan de universiteit en plant ze haar volgende stappen in een carri\u00e8re gericht op strafrecht. Ze koopt dezelfde items die ze ooit bij onze distributies heeft ontvangen en herschept haar favoriete met groenten gevulde soepen en stoofschotels voor haar zoon.<\/p>\n<\/div>
