We hebben dit voorjaar 92.843 pond sinaasappelen ontvangen van Village Harvest. Ze waren afkomstig van Moitizo Orchards, een boerderij van 14 hectare in San Jose. Dat zijn ongeveer 2,5 vrachtwagenladingen vol fruit die tijdens de COVID-19-pandemie in onze AGF-kisten zijn gegaan voor onze klanten.<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In 2018, Bob Moitozo en zijn familie<\/a> stopten met de commerci\u00eble verkoop van sinaasappelen en afgelopen seizoen werd hun hele boomgaard van 14 hectare geoogst en gedoneerd aan Second Harvest.<\/p>\n

"Ik vond het een misdaad om de sinaasappels op de grond te laten liggen," zei Bob. \u201cZo kwam ik in contact met Village Harvest<\/a>, en we sturen al zo'n vier jaar producten naar Second Harvest."<\/p>\n<\/div>

Bob en zijn familie zijn al meer dan 100 jaar eigenaar van hun boerderij, sinds zijn grootvader in 1915 een melkveebedrijf op het terrein begon. Ze begonnen halverwege de jaren '50 met het planten van peren en schakelden in de jaren '90 over op het telen van sinaasappels.<\/p>\n

Het is een van de laatst overgebleven boomgaarden in Silicon Valley en wordt tegenwoordig omringd door grote appartementencomplexen en technologiebedrijven.<\/p>\n

"Ik ben zo blij dat we hier lang genoeg zijn geweest voor mijn nichtjes en neefjes en hun kinderen om hier naar buiten te kunnen komen en dit allemaal te ervaren en te spelen zoals we deden toen we kinderen waren," zei Bob. \u201cMijn neef en zijn vrouw helpen me echt. Ik heb \u00e9\u00e9n werknemer, maar hij kon hier dit jaar niet komen vanwege gezondheidsproblemen en ik had hulp nodig bij het verplaatsen van tractoren.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Ook Andrews vierjarige dochter Calliope had plezier tijdens de oogst. Ze zei dat ze graag sinaasappels plukte.<\/p>\n<\/div>

'Er zijn fee\u00ebn binnen,' zei Calliope. 'Haar naam is Klaver. Ik eet graag sinaasappels, maar ik eet niet de huizen van de fee\u00ebn.\u201d Haar moeder Amanda legde uit dat ze zeggen dat de fee\u00ebn in de sinaasappelschillen leven.<\/p>\n

Dit jaar volgden vrijwilligers van Village Harvest de COVID-19-protocollen en konden ze een veilige afstand bewaren (\u00e9\u00e9n vrijwilliger tot een sinaasappelboom) terwijl ze de zoetgeurende vrucht plukten. Tot de groep behoorde Shruthi, die in een complex naast de boomgaard woont.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

"Toen ik mensen sinaasappels zag plukken uit mijn appartement aan de overkant, kwam ik hier en ze zeiden dat ik vrijwilligerswerk moest doen," zei Shruthi. "Dus ik heb me gewoon vrijwillig aangeboden en ik ben blij om hier te zijn."<\/p>\n<\/div>

Shruthi studeerde af aan de San Jose State University en herinnert zich dat ze tijdens haar studententijd eten uit de voorraadkast van de school haalde. Second Harvest werkt samen met voedselbanken voor studenten in de provincies Santa Clara en San Mateo en biedt gratis een mix van producten en droge goederen aan studenten in nood.<\/p>\n

"Vroeger haalden we elke maand boodschappen en vijf huisgenoten kwamen naar Spartan Pantry (in de staat San Jose) en stonden in de rij," zei Shruthi. \u201cIk kom uit India en had studieleningen. Destijds was een dollar voor mij 73 roepies. Het was heel leuk om dat eten te krijgen. Het was echt voedzaam: fruit, rijst, bonen, zuivel. We kregen dit gezonde voedsel dat we ons waarschijnlijk niet hadden kunnen veroorloven omdat we altijd dollars omwisselden voor roepies en dachten: 'oh, ik kan deze dingen niet kopen.'\u201d<\/p>\n

Speciale dank aan Craig Diserens, de uitvoerend directeur van Village Harvest, voor het organiseren van deze geweldige donatie. Village Harvest vierde zojuist zijn 20-jarig jubileum van het verbinden van mensen in nood met lokaal geteelde producten. Het doneert tot 250.000 pond aan producten per jaar aan organisaties in de Bay Area.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
