Toen de pandemie onze economie bevroor, overweldigde het onze klanten die al moeite hadden om de eindjes aan elkaar te knopen op een van de duurste plaatsen van het land. Toen servicemedewerkers en anderen in Silicon Valley hun baan begonnen te verliezen, verdubbelde het aantal mensen dat naar onze voedseldistributies kwam. We moesten drastische maatregelen nemen. We moesten ervoor zorgen dat iedereen in Silicon Valley toegang had tot voedzame boodschappen en tegelijkertijd de gezondheid van onze klanten, vrijwilligers en personeel beschermen tijdens een pandemie. Hoewel sommige veranderingen bedoeld waren om snel de uitdagingen van de dag het hoofd te bieden, heeft wat we hebben geleerd ons geholpen veranderingen aan te brengen waar onze klanten de komende jaren profijt van zullen hebben. Een van die veranderingen was om te stoppen met het aannemen van voedseldonaties van individuen om gezondheids- en veiligheidsredenen. Dat betekende dat de traditionele voedselacties moesten worden opgeschort omdat we voedsel van de gemeenschap niet veilig konden accepteren. Tegelijkertijd moesten we de hoeveelheid voedsel die we verstrekten drastisch verhogen, omdat steeds meer mensen ons om hulp vroegen. Als reactie op de stijgende behoefte hebben we onze activiteiten gestroomlijnd en magazijnruimte gebruikt die voorheen werd gebruikt voor het sorteren en verwerken van voedsel dat in onze vaten werd verzameld.<\/p>\n

Hoewel onze vaten een bekende plek in de gemeenschap zijn, kwam in feite slechts ongeveer 4% aan voedsel dat aan onze klanten werd gedistribueerd, afkomstig van voedseltransporten. Het overgrote deel van wat we distribueren, wordt geschonken door telers, voedselproducenten, verwerkers, groothandelaren, distributeurs en retailers. Er zijn enorme hoeveelheden voedsel nodig om elke maand 450.000 mensen van voedzame boodschappen te voorzien. We kopen ook voedsel in tegen groothandelsprijzen als aanvulling op wat wordt gedoneerd om ervoor te zorgen dat we klanten consequent een gezonde vari\u00ebteit aan voedsel bieden.<\/p>\n

We hebben de cijfers gekraakt<\/h3>\n

Toen het tijd werd om te overwegen ons traditionele voedselprogramma opnieuw op te starten, hebben we de cijfers op een rijtje gezet om te bepalen of het nog steeds een effectieve manier was om voedsel voor onze klanten te krijgen. Nadat we de kosten voor het produceren en vervoeren van de vaten, het sorteren en opslaan van het gedoneerde voedsel en het beheren en vermarkten van de campagnes bij elkaar optelden, ontdekten we dat traditionele voedselacties eigenlijk duurder zijn dan het kopen van voedsel.<\/p>\n

Onze focus is altijd geweest op het leveren van voedsel van de hoogste kwaliteit aan onze klanten en voedselacties zijn niet de beste manier om dat te doen. Door grootschalige donaties te accepteren en voedsel te kopen, kunnen we controleren wat we krijgen en ervoor zorgen dat onze klanten de voedzame items hebben die ze nodig hebben om te gedijen. Daarom hebben we besloten om ons traditionele fooddrive-programma voorgoed te be\u00ebindigen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Onze impact maximaliseren<\/h3>\n

We weten dat veel individuen, bedrijven en organisaties talloze uren hebben ge\u00efnvesteerd in het runnen van traditionele voedselacties voor Second Harvest, en we eren uw inzet voor onze missie. De beste manier om Second Harvest te ondersteunen is door een geldelijke donatie te doen, een virtuele voedselactie te starten om geld in te zamelen, of vrijwilligerswerk te doen in een Second Harvest-magazijn of voedseldistributiesite.<\/p>\n

Virtuele fooddrives kunnen net zo leuk en inspirerend zijn als traditionele fooddrives, zonder dat je fysiek voedsel hoeft te verzamelen. Online fondsenwerving kan nog steeds alle teambuildingactiviteiten en sociale aspecten van het runnen van een voedselactie omvatten. Het runnen van een virtuele voedselactie zal eigenlijk meer impact hebben, omdat de dollars die u inzamelt, nog meer voedzaam voedsel zullen opleveren voor de gezinnen die we bedienen.<\/p>\n

Vanwege ons vermogen om gebruik te maken van grootschalige voedseldonaties, bulkkoopkracht en vrijwilligers, helpt een $1-donatie ons om voldoende voedsel te leveren voor twee voedzame maaltijden. Financi\u00eble donaties helpen ervoor te zorgen dat we een voedzame mix van producten, magere eiwitten, volle granen en andere items kunnen selecteren die kinderen, gezinnen en senioren nodig hebben om gezond te blijven.<\/p>\n

Samen honger be\u00ebindigen<\/h3>\n

Traditionele fooddrives zijn diep geworteld in onze geschiedenis, maar ze zijn niet langer de beste manier om onze klanten te bedienen. Het zal veel gezinnen lang \u2013 misschien zelfs jaren \u2013 kosten om te herstellen van deze economische crisis. Second Harvest moet op de meest effectieve en effici\u00ebnte manier blijven opereren om aan deze ongekende behoefte te voldoen.<\/p>\n
