Onderzoekers van het National Cancer Institute (NCI) en de Universiteit van Calgary voerden de eerste langetermijnstudie uit naar de effecten van honger op de algemene gezondheid, waarbij kinderen vanaf de geboorte tot 21 jaar werden gevolgd.<\/p>\n<p>Fragmenten uit Time Magazine.<\/p>\n<p><em>In de nieuwe analyse ontdekten de wetenschappers dat kinderen die honger leden <strong>ten minste een keer<\/strong> in hun leven hadden 2,5 tot 10 keer meer kans op een slechte algehele gezondheid 10 tot 15 jaar later, vergeleken met degenen die nooit zonder voedsel hoefden te gaan. &quot;Ons onderzoek toont aan dat honger en voedselonzekerheid echt schadelijk zijn voor de levenskansen van kinderen&quot;, zegt hoofdauteur Sharon Kirkpatrick, een bezoekende fellow bij NCI.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>De studie ondersteunt eerdere bevindingen dat het vaker voorkomt dat meerdere episodes van honger een slechte gezondheid veroorzaken dan een ge\u00efsoleerde hongerdood: kinderen in Kirkpatrick&#039;s analyse <strong>die twee of meer periodes van honger hadden, hadden meer dan vier keer zoveel kans om een slechte gezondheid te melden dan degenen die nooit honger leden.<\/strong> De relatie bleef volgens haar sterk, zelfs nadat het team rekening had gehouden met andere factoren die de gezondheid zouden kunnen be\u00efnvloeden, zoals leeftijd, geslacht en huishoudelijke kenmerken zoals inkomen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Zelfs \u00e9\u00e9n ervaring van honger kan blijvende gevolgen hebben voor de gezondheid van een kind<\/strong>, een feit dat vooral verontrustend is in het licht van de ontnuchterende stijging van Amerikaanse huishoudens die in 2008 noodgedwongen zonder voedsel moesten: 15% van Amerikaanse gezinnen meldde een compromis in de hoeveelheid of kwaliteit van het voedsel dat zij consumeerden, vergeleken met 11% het jaar ervoor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hoewel deze studie niet inging op het specifieke mechanisme waarmee honger de gezondheid op lange termijn be\u00efnvloedt, speculeert Kirkpatrick dat zowel psychologische als fysiologische factoren mogelijk aan het werk zijn. Afgezien van de overduidelijke negatieve impact die ontbrekende belangrijke voedingsstoffen en calorie\u00ebn kunnen hebben op groei en ontwikkeling, zegt ze:<strong> de psychologische stress van voedselonzekerheid - het niet kunnen betalen van een consistente en hoogwaardige voedselbron - kan ook schadelijk zijn voor jongeren.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In een redactioneel commentaar bij de studie, gepubliceerd in de Archives of Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine, stellen kinderartsen voor om bestaande kindervoedingsprogramma&#039;s te versterken en uit te breiden, mogelijk gemaakt door wetgeving zoals de Child Nutrition Program Act, die financiering verstrekt voor voedsel- en voedingsinspanningen, waaronder de aanvullende Voedingsprogramma voor vrouwen, zuigelingen en kinderen, om ervoor te zorgen dat meer kinderen het voedsel krijgen dat ze nodig hebben. &quot;Het onderzoek zet ons echt aan om te kijken naar de impact die verschillende beleidsinterventies op voedselonzekerheid kunnen hebben op de gezondheid&quot;, zegt Kirkpatrick. &#039;Het is onaanvaardbaar dat we het in landen als de VS en Canada hebben over miljoenen kinderen in huishoudens met onzekere toegang tot voedsel.&#039;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Een nieuwe studie toont aan hoe gevaarlijk de langetermijneffecten van voedselonzekerheid op kinderen zijn.
