Fletcher is often the first client to arrive at the free grocery site at Mid-Peninsula Hispanic Outreach Ministry in San Mateo.<\/h3><\/div>

\u201cI\u2019m usually the first one in line and I like that!\u201d<\/p>\n

Fletcher is up so early he has time to greet the garbage man, have coffee with his buddies and get to the distribution site by 5:30 a.m., long before they even start passing out food. Fletcher is used to being early to places. He says he picked up the habit after driving for San Francisco\u2019s municipal bus service (Muni) for 15 years. “When I see people angrily waiting for a bus, it has taught me that if you want to make people happy, you gotta be early.”<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Fletcher, 61, has been married to his wife\u00a0Kesoan\u00a0for\u00a0almost 20\u00a0years. They live in a 44-unit apartment complex in San Mateo. He first started getting free groceries\u00a0from\u00a0Second Harvest of Silicon Valley when he started running out of food at the beginning of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019m always feeding people,\u201d Fletcher laughs. \u201cWhen corona started, people were out of work and I started asking around [the apartment complex] where I could get some more food for everyone because a lot of people were coming to my door.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Fletcher and his wife Keosan have been married for almost 20 years.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In February 2020,\u00a0right before the pandemic hit, Fletcher had a knee replacement,\u00a0and\u00a0he was out of work recuperating for about a year. That was the first time he worried about how he would get food for himself\u00a0and his wife, who is disabled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe neighbors came and helped us out because they knew I couldn\u2019t go anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Fletcher loves his job as a San Francisco Muni driver and has gotten regular commendations for a job well done over his 15 years of service.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Fletcher hands his neighbor Norma a pack of frozen chicken legs he picked up from his local drive-thru distribution. Fletcher shares food with his neighbors at his 44-unit apartment complex regularly.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Now Fletcher is back\u00a0to\u00a0work driving for\u00a0Muni. A typical shift is\u00a0a\u00a010-hour\u00a0day\u00a0filled with routes that take\u00a0roughly 70\u00a0minutes, depending on\u00a0delays. This means that he has 5-10 minutes between routes for breaks and snacks. Eating a typical lunch is out of the question, so\u00a0he\u00a0eats fruits and vegetables\u00a0he gets\u00a0from Second Harvest\u00a0and\u00a0lots of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Fletcher has always been called to volunteer and be of service. On top of\u00a0sharing\u00a0food\u00a0with\u00a0his community, Fletcher is a\u00a0volunteer with\u00a0the\u00a0San Francisco-based nonprofit\u00a0Food Runners,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0senior ambassador volunteer for SamTrans and\u00a0he\u00a0works the information desk at San Francisco International Airport.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cSecond Harvest asks me all the time, \u2018Fletch, you\u2019re always first in line, why don\u2019t you volunteer? You\u2019re already wearing a vest!\u2019 But they don\u2019t realize that there\u2019s a lot more to do when you bring back food for everyone here. It takes a lot of time to clean up!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

During the pandemic, Kesoan has been sharing her love of cooking traditional Thai desserts with neighbors in the complex.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

When we asked Fletcher why he thinks people come to him when they need food assistance, Fletcher said, \u201cBecause I help people a lot and they know that if I had the last milk, I would give it to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
