Leveraging 50 years of experience
to meet today’s challenges
In 2024 we marked Second Harvest’s 50th year of service in Silicon Valley, an incredible testament to all that is possible when this community comes together to ensure all of our neighbors have access to nutritious food. And as we reflected on five decades of accomplishments and memorable moments, we also worked to overcome the most challenging time in our history.
Record-high prices for everything — rent, groceries, gas, childcare, utilities and everyday items — brought record-high numbers of neighbors to us for food. A staggering 1 in 6 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties relied on us for assistance as inflation and the cost of housing stretched budgets past their breaking points. At the same time, community donations to our work decreased, putting enormous pressure on the food bank’s budget.
Each day our smart and passionate team looked for innovative new approaches to accomplish this work, drawing on our half-century of expertise to provide food to our neighbors more efficiently despite significantly fewer resources. We had to make difficult choices that impacted our clients, partners and our organization, but in doing so we were able to continue meeting the high level of need, feeding 500,000 people every month.
It wasn’t easy, but it was extraordinary, it was important, and every donor, volunteer, partner, staff member and supporter of the food bank played a critical role in providing access to nutritious food to anyone who needed it.
Thank you for supporting Second Harvest and for being part of this powerful movement working to end hunger in our community. We know challenges lie ahead as the community continues to grapple with the widening wealth gap and we continue to see the highest need for food assistance in our history. But Silicon Valley is known for solving some of the world’s most challenging problems, and with the collective power of our experience and your support, we can end hunger here at home.

Our Community
In 1974, we distributed food to community members through 13 partners in Santa Clara County. Today, Second Harvest is at the heart of the largest charitable food distribution system in Silicon Valley, supplying fresh food through more than 400 partners at over 900 sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Almost every nonprofit providing charitable food in Silicon Valley is likely getting it from Second Harvest, free of charge. Our extensive partner distribution network, which includes affordable housing sites, schools, colleges, libraries, senior centers, rehabilitation centers, shelters, soup kitchens, medical clinics and more, is critical to our mission of ending hunger in our community.
Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is in the minority of food banks in the Feeding America network that does not charge partners for the food they receive. By removing the cost barrier, we are able to work with community partners of all sizes to ensure as many people as possible have access to nutritious food.
50 Years of Increasing Need
1 in 6 people in Silicon Valley turn to Second Harvest for food every month because there is simply not enough money to cover basic expenses and buy groceries. Food insecurity has always existed in Silicon Valley, but it is even more dire today. It is now sitting at a historic peak as the economic impact of the pandemic and inflation on vulnerable households is still radiating through Silicon Valley. Working families, seniors on fixed incomes and college students trying to make ends meet are still having to make hard choices between paying for rent, childcare, medicine, food and other essentials.

“Housing is so expensive here. Ten years ago I was paying $1,200 for two bedrooms, and now it’s double that. That’s why we are now all living in one bedroom. The five of us. We use bunkbeds.”

“Food stamps [CalFresh] are not enough to buy fresh fruits nowadays. I get fresh fruits and veggies here. When necessary, I use my savings to buy additional groceries like Vietnamese ingredients or meat.”

Here to Help, No Matter What
Since its inception in 1988, our Food Connection hotline has referred clients to sources of free food close to where they live or work. Today, our Food Connection team helps households stretch their budgets by providing referrals to food programs and screening for CalFresh eligibility. The team is here to help no matter the situation our clients are experiencing, whether it is homebound seniors, households working multiple jobs but still not earning enough to get by, or individuals concerned about making ends meet after losing their jobs. In an area where the cost of living is so high that 60% of our clients have less than $100 in savings, our Food Connection team is ready to help, knowing that one life event really can change everything.

Showing Up
for Our Community
Volunteers have always been critical to our ability to provide food assistance to our community. Last year, a record number of dedicated individuals showed up again and again to help us consistently feed 500,000 people every month. Their impact goes beyond numbers — volunteers help sort food at warehouses, distribute food to neighbors, welcome clients to distribution sites, help clients find the groceries they need, and create a sense of community for all involved.

Sustainably Sourcing 125
Million Pounds
To maintain the steady supply of nutritious food we source and distribute — like fresh fruits, veggies, eggs, dairy, grains and pantry staples — we leverage large-scale food donations, manage a robust grocery rescue program and purchase in bulk. We prevent food waste by rescuing large volumes of quality food from farms and retail stores and distributing it to households facing hunger. Of the 125 million pounds of food we sourced and distributed last year, 72% was rescued. Our retail rescue program, which sources nutritious foods close to their sell-by date from local stores, provided partner agencies with over 16 million pounds of quality food to nourish our neighbors and keep more food out of landfills.
Food Fosters Community and Connection
Food is more than diet and nourishment; it’s also deeply tied to culture, joy and a sense of belonging. Our Nutrition Education team and Health Ambassador volunteers are dedicated to ensuring our clients not only have consistent and equitable access to nutritious foods but also experience educational and engaging opportunities that build community, foster connections and enhance resilience.
This past year, our Nutrition Education department hosted nearly 190 outreach events and classes, supporting our clients’ healthy relationships with food, sharing cherished food memories, and inspiring joy in cooking the foods they love. In our Nutrition Center, our recipe library has grown to showcase 155 culturally diverse recipes that are not only affordable and nutritious but also simple to prepare with food provided by Second Harvest. These delicious recipes reflect our dedication to nourishing our community.

Strengthening the Food Insecurity Safety Net
In the face of a tough budget year, Second Harvest worked to protect essential food access benefits for low-income households. We were successful in getting additional state support for the new SUN Bucks program, which provides low-income K-12 students with $120 during the summer to replace the meals they receive while school is in session. We are also grateful to the state legislature for additional investments in the California Fruit and Vegetable Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) Program and Market Match, which help stretch households’ CalFresh benefits to purchase fresh, nutritious foods. Combined, these programs are a powerful addition to the safety net for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

Leaving a Lasting Impact
Thank you to members of the Second Harvest Legacy Society for helping to end hunger in our community. Each Legacy Society member has included a gift to Second Harvest in their will, trust, retirement plan or insurance policy.
Martha Carpenter made her first donation to Second Harvest in 1991. She remembers giving because of a very specific ask: “This amount will feed a family for a month.”
Martha came to the (then) small town of Cupertino from Ohio in the 1960s. She arrived in the Valley of Heart’s Delight to take a job as a 4th-grade teacher and remembers seeing many apricot orchards. Over the years, she transitioned to a career in finance for different tech companies in the area.
“When choosing where to donate, it was important to me that it was local. It was something I could kind of touch and feel and get involved in. And food is just about the most basic thing you can give.”
Not only has Martha been a loyal donor, but she has also been an avid volunteer. Martha loved volunteering at our free grocery distributions and engaging with her community, which made her feel closer to our mission.
“I saw how important food was to everyone because people came regularly. And it was interesting to see so many senior citizens. That was an eye-opener.”
Martha spoke about how important it was to maximize her contributions. She noticed that other charities gave a lot less to programs and a lot more to administration or marketing, and she ultimately chose to put Second Harvest in her will because of our efficiency.
“Second Harvest has such a high percentage of donations that are going directly to programs. That was something that made me choose you. If someone is just starting to plan their estate, they may not know about things like Charity Navigator where they can go and look and learn about a charity’s efficiency.”
Martha’s legacy is not just about her financial contributions. She also hopes to inspire her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to be socially involved one day, just as she has been all her life. By adding Second Harvest as a beneficiary to her estate plans, she is leaving a lasting impact on her community and inspiring future generations to do the same.
