Progress and Resilience in a Year of Change

Leslie Bacho, CEO, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley

Fiscal year 2024–2025 was a year of both tremendous progress and unprecedented challenges for Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.

With your support, we continued to serve 1 in 6 neighbors in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties — families, college students and seniors working hard to make ends meet to afford Silicon Valley’s high cost of living.

Shifts at the national level added new pressures. The USDA’s sudden cancellation of nearly $1 million in food originally allocated to us placed an unexpected strain on our budget. At the same time, elevated food costs created even greater pressure on already strained households. These forces combined to challenge our capacity in unprecedented ways.

And yet, in the face of these headwinds, our community stood strong. Our talented and dedicated team rose to the challenge, and you — our donors, partners and volunteers — stepped forward with generosity and resolve. With your partnership, we remained focused on our mission: ending hunger in our community.

Together, we achieved critical milestones:

  • With the pandemic behind us, we transitioned from providing groceries to neighbors in pre-packed boxes back to farmers’ market–style distributions, providing more choice and dignity to families and strengthening the sense of community that reminds every neighbor they are not alone.
  • We expanded our world-class grocery and food rescue programs, ensuring that nutritious, high-quality food nourishes our neighbors rather than ending up in landfills.
  • We broke ground on a new facility that will unify operations, create long-term efficiencies and position us to serve this community for decades to come.

Even with these and many other successes, we know the challenges ahead remain serious. Cuts to SNAP (or CalFresh in California, formerly food stamps) will increase the number of families coming to us for help, even as high food costs make it more expensive for us to provide it.

I’m still hopeful. With our extraordinary team, trusted community partners and supporters like you who give with such heart and conviction, we can meet these challenges and continue to make meaningful progress on our mission together.

Hunger is a solvable problem, but it can only be solved by all of us working together. Thank you for showing up for our community with compassion and commitment, ensuring access to nutritious food today and building the foundation for a stronger, more resilient community for the future.

In partnership,

Leslie Bacho, CEO, Zweite Ernte des Silicon Valley

A Network That Nourishes

Second Harvest is at the heart of the charitable food distribution system in Silicon Valley, supplying fresh, nutritious food through a network of nearly 400 partners at more than 900 sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Almost every nonprofit providing charitable food in Silicon Valley is likely getting it from Second Harvest, free of charge. Our extensive partner distribution network, which includes affordable housing sites, schools, colleges, libraries, community and senior centers, faith communities, shelters, meal sites and more, is critical to our mission of ending hunger in our community.

Our community-powered approach keeps us nimble and ready to respond when needs change. Over the past year, we’ve worked alongside our partners to transition grocery distribution sites from low-contact drive-thrus with pre-boxed food, which were essential during the pandemic, back to vibrant, farmers’ market–style distributions. This model allows clients to select the foods and quantities that work best for their households while helping us make the most of our resources. Together, we’re meeting the ongoing need for food assistance with compassion, efficiency and care, ensuring every meal strengthens our community.

The Cost of Getting By

Life is getting harder for low-income households in Silicon Valley. The high costs of essentials like rent, food and childcare already take up a significant portion of the budget for neighbors living on fixed incomes or working hard in jobs that keep our community running. Cuts to government benefits will push families who were barely getting by into deeper crisis. When every dollar is already stretched thin, even small reductions in support can have devastating ripple effects that result in empty pantries, unpaid bills and impossible choices between food, medicine and shelter. We have always been there for our neighbors during times of crisis, and we are not going anywhere now.

“Inflation is crazy! It’s really crazy the prices in the store. And WIC and CalFresh – sometimes that’s not enough.”

Here When Help Is Needed Most

Second Harvest’s Food Connection hotline team is often the first lifeline for our neighbors facing hunger. Acting as a compassionate and trusted referral hub, the multilingual team connects individuals and families not only to immediate food assistance through our sites and partners, but also to long-term programs like CalFresh (formerly known as food stamps). Each call is met with empathy and personalized support, helping clients navigate their unique circumstances, reduce stigma and feel empowered to seek help. This year, our outreach team expanded direct engagement and deepened partnerships with community organizations and medical providers, ensuring that even more of our most vulnerable neighbors are aware of – and have access to – the food they need to thrive.

“Clients will say to me, ‘I’ve been working here my whole life, and I never knew about CalFresh.’ They never knew there was this benefit. One client was already 67 when they learned about CalFresh. They lost their job at 60 and said they had no income at all. Those calls are very emotional.”

Claribel Chavez

Food Connection Medical Coordinator

“When a college student doesn’t get approved for CalFresh, of course they’re upset and they say, ‘I’m trying the best I can. I’m a full-time student and I’m going to work and I still don’t qualify for this.’ They’re trying to do something with their lives, they’re also working, and they still don’t get approved.”

Food Connection Outreach Specialist

“I believe that when I do my job correctly to support the clients, I can make a difference for them.”

Volunteering Where
It Matters Most

For the first time since 2012, Second Harvest welcomed back food sort volunteers at our Curtner Center to help with our increase in grocery rescue, marking a milestone in both flexibility and community connection. At the same time, our transition to farmers’ market-style, client-choice distributions created new ways for volunteers to make an impact closer to home – serving at distributions in their own neighborhoods and connecting with the people they support. Many embraced this shift, finding deeper purpose in supporting their community, turning local action into lasting change and helping to build more resilient, food-secure neighborhoods.

“The most rewarding part about being a site leader is being able to improve the food distribution for both the volunteers and our clients. For example, giving volunteers small boxes and bags so they can easily give out bulk produce, or trying to offer more cultural food to our clients so they feel welcome at our site.”

“I’ve enjoyed it. I started volunteering here three days a week. I met a group of people; there were about eight to 10 of us volunteering every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and we met here. Then the pandemic hit, and I started volunteering five days a week because they really needed volunteers.”

Sourcing with Purpose

To maintain the steady supply of nutritious food we source and distribute – including fresh produce, dairy, grains and pantry staples – we leverage large-scale food donations, manage a robust grocery rescue program and purchase in bulk. We prevent food waste by rescuing large volumes of quality food from farms and retail stores and distributing it to households facing food insecurity. In fact, Second Harvest is the leader in food rescue in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, and recovered the vast majority of rescued food in our counties last year.

Of the nearly 111 million pounds we distributed in total, 75% was rescued – more than 17 million pounds from retail stores alone – nourishing neighbors, preventing waste and keeping food out of landfills. By continuing to expand our food rescue programs, we are able to efficiently and more sustainably source and provide a nutritious mix of foods to our clients and partners.

Inspiring Confidence and Joy in the Kitchen

Access to nutritious food is essential, but knowing how to prepare and enjoy that food makes all the difference. Our Community Health and Nutrition team, together with our dedicated Health Ambassador volunteers, helps ensure that clients and their families feel confident and inspired to turn their groceries into flavorful meals, all while honoring culture, tradition and personal preferences.

This past year, our team hosted over 260 outreach events, bringing culinary and nutrition education to community spaces across the two counties we serve. These events included hands-on cooking classes, nutrition workshops, food demonstrations and resource fairs. At the heart of this work was creating a welcoming gathering space where neighbors could connect over food, explore new ingredients and share in the joy of cooking. Whether discovering how to cook with a new produce item or learning a quick, nutritious recipe, clients left feeling empowered to cook meals they know and love.

"I have several health issues, including severe scoliosis and pre-diabetes. I think one of my biggest barriers to eating healthier is that my income is very limited, and I have many expenses for myself and my son, who also has special needs. I appreciate these classes because they give me easy ideas to incorporate in my day-to-day life."

Ensuring Access When It Matters Most

This year brought significant challenges for our community as vital government support came under threat. The passage of the federal budget reconciliation bill, known as the Big Beautiful Bill, enacted the deepest cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), called CalFresh in California and formerly known as food stamps, in history. These cuts, along with cuts to Medicaid, will have real consequences that ripple across dinner tables, classrooms and communities. While no food bank can fill a gap of this magnitude, we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting our neighbors in every way we can. We will continue to advocate for critical food and nutrition programs like SNAP and to speak out on the root causes of hunger. We successfully secured additional state funding for the CalFood program this year, which will help us continue to provide California-grown, fresh and nutritious foods to our clients. Together with our community, we can make sure every neighbor has the food they need to stay healthy and hopeful in the year ahead.

Generosity in Action

This year, the generosity of our supporters fueled our work in powerful ways. From steady monthly gifts to community-led fundraisers, care and conviction shone through every act of giving. Schools, congregations, individuals and businesses came together to host 160 fundraisers, inspiring over 2,000 first-time donors. More than 4,000 monthly donors provided steady, year-round resources we could count on. In total, this collective effort raised over $4 million – enough to help provide 8 million meals. Together, these contributions turned moments into movements and gifts into lasting change.

A special note of thanks to Second Harvest’s Evergreen Society, a group of dedicated supporters who have made multi-year gift commitments that provide the stable, reliable funding we need to plan boldly, invest strategically and respond effectively to both ongoing needs and unexpected challenges. Their sustained support deepens their impact and helps build a stronger, more resilient community.

“A multi-year commitment gives our nonprofit colleagues the chance to dream big and tackle issues that take more than a fiscal year to accomplish. That is why I support Second Harvest with a multi-year gift.” – John D.

Capital Campaign Supporters

Second Harvest’s current operations were not built to meet today’s level of need. Through a historic capital campaign, we are building a central, energy-efficient home for Second Harvest that can more sustainably serve Silicon Valley and improve community health for decades to come. Thank you to the donors who have contributed to our capital campaign to build a food-secure future for Silicon Valley. As of September 2025, we have raised over 85% of the total funding for our new facility in North San Jose. After breaking ground in summer 2025, we look forward to opening our doors in 2027.

The new Second Harvest of Silicon Valley headquarters represents a significant leap forward in addressing food insecurity, not only expanding immediate capacity but also building in the critical ability to scale for future needs. Cisco is immensely proud to be a lead partner in this visionary project, reinforcing our commitment to fostering resilient and thriving communities across Silicon Valley.”

Nachhaltige Wirkung hinterlassen

Like many Second Harvest Legacy Society members, Vicki Nosanov Goldman made a gift to Second Harvest in her will. We were not aware of her plans until her generous bequest arrived after her passing in 2024. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one person’s generosity can have on our community.

Her friend and trustee, Deanna, believes Vicki’s choice to support Second Harvest came from personal experience. As a college student, Vicki sometimes did not have enough to eat. Deanna, who worked at a local donut shop, would bring her boxes of day-old donuts, and Vicki often said they kept her fed that summer.

As a middle school teacher, Vicki taught social studies and food and nutrition. She opened her classroom early so students could eat, and she shared the harvest from her garden with neighbors in need – especially families with children. Food was central to her life: “She loved making it, eating it and sharing it,” said Deanna.

Vicki lived her values through her generosity, supporting Second Harvest and many other causes. She is one of nearly 200 Legacy Society members whose bequests will help us provide food to our community well into the future.

Legacy donors help us achieve our goal of providing fresh, nutritious food to anyone who needs it in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, now and in the future. If you are including us in your legacy plans, please contact Donor Relations at 1-866-234-3663 or donor.relations@shfb.org.
