It’s finally starting to feel like fall outside, which could only mean the holidays are coming up. With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner, we would like to remind everyone of the importance of food safety, whether you’re cooking at home or volunteering with us!
A foodborne disease outbreak occurs when two or more people get the same illness from the same contaminated food and the No. 1 cause is due to poor personal hygiene!
This video shares how easy it is to prevent foodborne illnesses by properly washing your hands:
At Second Harvest, food safety is one of our top priorities to ensure our clients are receiving safely handled and healthy foods. Every first Friday (our Bing Center in San Carlos) and third Friday (our Curtner Center in San Jose) of the month, our Nutrition Education managers provide a free food safety training class for our partner agencies, food distribution site leaders, and staff.
During this training, participants learn about their role in keeping food safe, good personal hygiene, receiving and storing food safely, evaluating and transporting food safely, and cleaning and sanitizing. In addition to the training, we have a variety of materials available at the food bank on expiration dates, safe poultry handling, and how to properly wash your hands. These handouts (available in English/Spanish and Vietnamese/Chinese) are provided to our agencies and distribution sites upon request.
