We recently hosted two events at our Cypress Center in San Jose to celebrate our community’s commitment to end local hunger: the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, which took place on Monday, April 30, and Make Hunger History Awards, which took place on Thursday, May 3rd.

We are so grateful to everyone who attended and wanted to share a few pictures and a little bit about these events with you.

Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon 

Did you know? Last year, more than 338,000 volunteer hours were donated to Second Harvest. This gift of time is valued at $7.1 million, the equivalent of 163 full-time employees. We couldn’t do what we do without the help of our incredibly amazing volunteers!

On Monday, April 30, we celebrated our volunteers during our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. This year, the Hawaiian-themed event was informative, lighthearted and FUN. About 200 volunteers enjoyed good food, bingo and raffle prizes, music from Harvest Beat (Second Harvest’s band) and most importantly the company of other like-minded volunteers!

Make Hunger History Awards

Did you know? Second Harvest’s donors host over 1,600 Food and Fund Drives every year.

On Thursday, May 3, we hosted our 2018 Make Hunger History Awards event. The event’s goal was to celebrate and recognize the companies, community groups and individuals who organized Food and Fund Drives and supported our mission in 2017. Over 300 people from very diverse groups (neighborhood associations, corporations, schools, congregations) attended the celebration.

“The Make Hunger History Awards is such a great event because it really is our chance to say ‘thank you’ to all the amazing groups that support Second Harvest. Tackling hunger in Silicon Valley is a daunting task, but what we see with the awards ceremony is that everyone in our community, whether it is a school, congregation, or a corporation, plays a key role in ensuring our neighbors in need can get healthy, nutritious food,” said Bernadette White, Second Harvest Community Relations Officer.
