Summertime is supposed to be fun and carefree for kids, but for many families, it can mean additional financial strain. In a region where food insecurity is already higher than the national average, when school gets out thousands of Silicon Valley children lose reliable access to nutritious daily meals. But there’s good news: SUN Bucks, the USDA’s Summer EBT initiative, is here to help maximize families’ food budgets this summer.

Through SUN Bucks, eligible families in California will receive $120 per child to spend on nutritious groceries throughout the summer months. The funds are provided via a convenient debit card, making it easy for families to shop for healthy foods at grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and even certain online retailers.

“It [SUN Bucks] really helped us as we have the children at home all day, so they eat here more, so we spend more on food,” says Diana, a mom of three kids living in San Jose. “All kinds of food, fruits, vegetables, juices, snacks, in these times when prices seem unattainable for us with low incomes.”

Rachel Monaco, Senior Manager of Policy and Advocacy at Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, explains: “Despite being one of the wealthiest regions in the nation, 1 in 4 children in Silicon Valley is at risk of hunger. Programs like SUN Bucks are essential to closing the summer hunger gap, helping families put food on the table when school meals are unavailable.”

Kinderen van 0 tot en met 22 jaar die naar een school gaan die het Nationaal School Lunch Programma of het School Ontbijt Programma aanbiedt en die in aanmerking komen voor gratis of gereduceerde schoolmaaltijden, worden automatisch ingeschreven.1

Kinderen tussen de 6 en 18 jaar die al CalFresh, CalWORKS, TANF, FDPIR of Medi-Cal krijgen2 during the 2025-2026 school year will automatically get SUN Bucks.

Als uw kind niet in een van de bovenstaande programma's zit, of als u niet zeker weet of uw kind in aanmerking komt,3 een aanvraag voor universele uitkeringen invullen to confirm eligibility so that you can ensure your SUN Bucks will be available when your child gets out of school for the summer. Neem contact op met het schoolkantoor van uw kind voor de aanvraag en het voorkeursproces. De Universal Benefits Application stelt gezinnen niet alleen in aanmerking voor SUN Bucks, maar kan ook toegang bieden tot extra voordelen, zoals kortingen op vervoer, internetdiensten en meer.

    1: Houd er rekening mee dat deelname aan het Universal Meals Program niet automatisch betekent dat een kind in aanmerking komt voor SUN Bucks. Informeer bij de school van uw kind of u een aanvraag voor Universal Benefits moet invullen om de geschiktheid voor SUN Bucks te bevestigen.
    2: Niet alle kinderen met Medi-Cal komen automatisch in aanmerking voor SUN Bucks. Als uw kind Medi-Cal ontvangt, maar uw huishouden een inkomen heeft boven 185% van de federale armoedegrens (FPL), moet u een aanvraag indienen. Dit geldt vaak ook voor kinderen die Supplemental Security Income/State Supplementary Payment (SSI/SSP) of het Adoption Assistance Program ontvangen.
    3: Families not yet enrolled or unsure about their eligibility may qualify if the family’s gross income is below the following ranges for the 2025-2026 school year.
